BOSTON BRUINS
Originality: B
Aesthetic Appeal: B+
Overall Grade: B+
The Bruins are yet another team to feature a black alternate, except one of the few teams who features a black alternate in addition to their black home jerseys. These jerseys are very simple, which is cool, and the logo on the front is badass. However, these jerseys don't wow you in action, so I think a solid B is in order.
BUFFALO SABRES
Originality: B-
Aesthetic Appeal: A
Overall Grade: A-
These jerseys harken back to the old days in Buffalo with a few modern twists. This is definitely better than their old black and red ones and their current slug buffalo blue and gold ones, but not quite as awesome as their Winter Classic jerseys from a few years ago. These are definitely the best jerseys in their three jersey set, and they are a damn good alternate.
OTTAWA SENATORS
Originality: B+
Aesthetic Appeal: A-
Overall Grade: A-
As much as I dislike the Senators and Daniel Alfredsson, they do have a badass all around jersey set, including these new "Sens" alternates. I like this trend in the NHL of teams using slang versions of their team names on their alternate jerseys (see Tampa Bay Lightning soon). I am a BIG fan of the number font on all the Senators jerseys, and this one is no different. Again, I strongly dislike this team, but I can't argue with their badass jerseys.
TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
Originality: B+
Aesthetic Appeal: A
Overall Grade: A
The concept of playing in throwback jerseys is not a point of originality in any sport anymore, but the Maple Leafs were one of the first teams in any sport to name one of their throwbacks and official alternate jerseys. AND they are one of two NHL teams to have their alternate jerseys be white (the other one is the Stars and as you may have read before, those are awful). These jerseys look GREAT on and off the ice, and are overall one of my favorite alternate jerseys in any sport.
And as with every division I've done so far, at least one team doesn't have an official alternate jersey. In this division's case, that team gets a pass because it is the Montreal Canadiens who have won 24 Cups and they can do whatever they want. Also, the Canadiens have been wearing throwback jerseys for their 100th anniversary. You stay classy, Montreal.
